Herbville

Who are we?

We are a group of people who share the idea that herbs are a very important part of daily life and hope to teach and encourage anyone interested to learn more about them.

What do we do?

The idea of the project ‘Herb Ville’ came about at an ‘Incredible Edible’ meeting in winter of 2017. We all came to the conclusion that it could be educational, visually attractive, sustainable and useful as a town project. Each bed will have a theme such as Medicinal, Culinary, Bird/Bee friendly etc. The focus is to get ten herb beds planted and labelled around the town as soon as we can.

We joined up with Jacquie Kilbryde who is a medical herbalist and she was very happy to collaborate with us to give us information on which herbs to plant. She also agreed to do a few workshops to show people how to use the herbs for everyday use. Take a look at her herb descriptions and practical uses.

We set about contacting the Men’s Shed to ask for their help in building the boxes. They very kindly made several, and we now have two big planters full of wonderful herbs in a Co-Action garden on Townsend Street.

They contain mostly culinary herbs such as parsley, thyme and sage and some lovely aromatic herbs such as lemon verbena and lemon balm which are great in teas, relaxing Lavender and vibrant Calendula.

The project is open to anyone interested, be it businesses offering a space, groups, or individuals wishing to volunteer, all are welcome to get involved. This spring, 2019  we will place more planters in the town. Anyone interested in growing herbs or learning more about them is more than welcome to join us or contact us on 085 1455886.
